phonetics :
Phonetics is a branch in linguistics that extracts sounds in a language. Phonetics transcribe these sounds using the symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) .
So what is Phonetics Exactly?
Phonetics is the study of the sounds that build up the words of a language. Every language has its own criterias and there are sounds in English that you have never use in your Language, and sounds in your language that we might never heard of in English and one of the most difficult point about English is the pronunciation. This introduction to phonetics will make a comparison between the written and the spoken. We do have 26 letters in the alphabet but modern English uses almost 44 different sounds. So when you look at word, it can not be that easy to spot, the right spelling and how to pronounce it ,because the same letters can be pronounced similarly in different words.
Pronunciation is Physical !!
The secret to great pronunciation is to understand that making the sounds of speech is physical . If you are notused to speaking English it won’t feel natural for you to use your mouth and your tongue in the way you should. So if you want to upgrade your pronunciation, think about those questions:
- Where does each sound comes from?
- Is the jaw open or closed?
- What shape is the mouth?
- Where should the tongue be?
- Does air come out of my mouth when i say the sound?
- Is it voiced?
Incorrect pronunciation is always the result of producing the sound in a way that is physically wrong. So you can see how there are many variations in English between spelling and pronunciation. So phonetics gives us a tool to write words as they arespoken.
