Reading Techniques
The following strategies and tools can be used to level up your reading rate and comprehension.
- Step 1: Survey
- Skim through the book and read thematic/sub-thematical sentences. Read summaries at the end ofeach chapters and book. Try to guess what the author is going to say. Write-down these notes on a notebook, then look it over to get an overall idea.
- Step 2: Questions
- Turn paragraph main idea into questions . Write these questions down.
- Step 3: Read
- Read with awareness to answer the questions you came up with. Write down notes, in your own style, under each question.
- Step 4: Recall
- Without looking at your notes, mentally visualize, in your own style, the main points of the text immediately after completing the reading
- ** extra time should be spent on recall more than reading
- Step 5: Review
- Look at your questions, answers, notes and text to see how well you did in remembering. Finish up with a mental picture of the WHOLE
Steps to Follow in Skimming for the Main Ideas :
- Read the title of the text carefully. extract what clues it gives you as to what the text is about. Watch for key words like “causes,” “results,” “effects,” etc., and do not overlook signal words like those suggesting (“versus”, “pros and cons”), which ispots the planning of the author and presents both sides of an argument.
- Look carefully at the main ideas and other and clues. These will lead you to the main points that the author wants you to receive.
