How to Deliver speech - Step-by-step instructions
A speech should align the interest of the audience with a specific piece of information or a goal in order to influence and manipulate it. In the political sphere, this becomes clear very quickly. But even in the social, religious, moral or private sphere, these principles remain the goal of a speech - with the exception of a bereavement. In order not to lose the common thread, one writes down the speech.
If you have to give a speech, you should invest a lot of time in preparation and practice, especially if you don't have much speaking experience before. This applies to a presentation at school as well as to a presentation at work or a wedding speech : If you want it to be good, you have to invest time in the preparation. Incidentally, this does not mean that you can memorize the speech down to the last detail, on the contrary: You should speak freely , but the structure of the speech and certain key sentences simply have to fit.
Too many filler words
Most people remember a former teacher or professor who used certain idioms or filler words all the time. Keeping tally sheets or making bets on this is a popular game among high school and university students and is a clear sign that the speaker is not engaging his audience at all. Repeated phrases like "so," "as it were," "as such," "as you know," and so on have no meaning in the speech, but degenerate into idle chatter . And that also has an effect on the speech: it then also seems empty and arbitrary. Therefore, find out which “favorite words” you use in order to avoid them in the future. We especially like to use them when we are excited
The wrong posture
In a conversation or a speech, the spoken word is only a small part of the communication. We convey a great deal of information through tone of voice , posture , facial expressions and gestures . These must therefore fit the speech. Standing in a slump, never making eye contact , or possibly using inappropriate gestures (thus sending ambiguous signals) harms your speech. Poor posture indicates low self-confidence . Practicing in front of the mirror or the camera is therefore a very helpful rhetorical exercise.
Bad speech structure
You can bore your listeners to death with just the first few sentences. "Before I get to the actual topic, I would like to quickly..." Such an announcement shows that this is getting longer (and probably quite boring). Instead, find a relaxed beginning that engages listeners emotionally and in terms of content. The structure of the speech is also important later on. Don't get bogged down in details or small talk , just focus on the most important points and get to the end on time.
Too awkward expression
Unfortunately, many people still see it as a sign of higher education to express themselves in a complicated way. Passive constructions, mammoth sentences and foreign words then combine into a mishmash that may seem impressive, but nobody understands it. To deliver a compelling speech, you should express yourself simply . Choose short sentences and suitable pictures and avoid foreign words as far as possible. Appropriate technical terms are an exception if you are speaking in front of an appropriately trained audience. As a rule, however, you should keep your presentation short and concise and avoid excess.
Be a convinced rhetorician
A good speaker can also convince his audience of things that he does not advocate himself. However, it is much easier (and also more honest) if you yourself are convinced of what you are presenting . This will automatically make you appear more authentic and emotional. An important step in this is to really understand the content. You should know a lot more than you pack into your speech. Then you can always explain in more detail and with spontaneous words why what is presented is important.
Take your audience seriously
Not only the speech structure and your own presentation is important for success, but also your audience . You should know who you're going to talk to. What is the level of education , prior knowledge and specialist knowledge ? What appeals to your listeners emotionally, what are "sore points"? The more you know about your audience, the better you can reach them. Even during the lecture, you should never lose sight of your audience. Pay attention to their reactions , make eye contact with individuals . This conveys attention and appreciation. Address your audience directly instead of using the impersonal "man". For example, a popular tool is the rhetorical question . You don't expect a real answer to that. Nonetheless, it encourages the audience to think.
